Lost GoPro Found After Nine Years in Malta’s Waters
Imagine losing something precious in the vast, unyielding sea. Now imagine finding it, nine years later, on the other side of the island. This isn’t a tale of lost treasure or sunken ships, but a story of a GoPro camera and the diver who reunited it with its owner.
Lost at Sea, Found in Marsaxlokk
In 2013, a man named Mark was on a diving trip off the coast of Xlendi, Gozo. As he explored the depths, his GoPro camera, containing precious footage of his underwater adventures, slipped from its mount and disappeared into the blue abyss. Mark searched but to no avail; the camera was gone, swallowed by the sea.
Fast forward to 2022. Diver and Marsaxlokk local, Joe, was exploring the waters near the picturesque fishing village. As he swam, he spotted something glinting on the seabed. It was a GoPro camera, encrusted with barnacles and marine growth, a silent witness to years underwater.
Reviving the GoPro’s Memories
Joe took the camera home, cleaned it up, and charged the battery. To his amazement, the GoPro still worked. Inside were videos of Mark’s dives, frozen in time, waiting to be seen again. Joe, determined to reunite the footage with its owner, turned to social media.
Mark, now living in Australia, saw Joe’s post. He was astonished and overjoyed. “I never thought I’d see that footage again,” he said, recalling the dives he’d made with his late father, now immortalized on the recovered GoPro.
A Tale of Two Divers
Mark and Joe, connected by the sea and a shared love for diving, are now planning to meet in Malta. Their story is a testament to the power of social media, the resilience of technology, and the kindness of strangers. It’s also a reminder that sometimes, the sea gives back what it takes.
As for the GoPro, it’s back in Mark’s hands, its memory card filled with new adventures. And Joe? He’s back in the water, exploring the depths, always on the lookout for the next underwater treasure.
