Man Jailed 2 Years for Harassment in Malta
Man Jailed for Two Years and €7k Fine in Harassment Case
In a landmark case, a Maltese man was sentenced to two years in prison and fined €7,000 for harassing his former partner. The sentence, handed down by Judge Joseph Mifsud, sends a strong message about the seriousness of such offences in Malta.
Harassment Campaign Revealed
The man, a 35-year-old from Birkirkara, was found guilty of repeatedly harassing his ex-partner over a period of six months. The campaign included constant phone calls, messages, and even physical stalking. The victim, a 32-year-old woman from Msida, bravely came forward and reported the incidents to the police.
“I was terrified,” she told Hot Malta. “I didn’t know what he would do next. I’m relieved that he’s finally been held accountable.”
Legal Precedent Set
This case marks a significant step forward in Malta’s approach to harassment cases. The two-year jail term is one of the longest sentences ever imposed for such an offence, reflecting the severity of the man’s actions. The €7,000 fine also serves as a deterrent to potential offenders.
Daphne Caruana, a lawyer specializing in family law, welcomed the sentence. “This sends a clear message that harassment will not be tolerated in Malta. We hope that more victims will now feel empowered to come forward and report such incidents,” she said.
Inspector Mario Azzopardi, who led the investigation, praised the victim’s courage. “Her bravery in coming forward has led to a just outcome. We hope that this case will encourage others to report harassment,” he said.
