Mdina Man Jailed for Harassment: A Tale of Love Gone Wrong
Local Man Sentenced for Harassment: A Tale of Love Gone Wrong in Malta
In the heart of Malta, the historic streets of Mdina whispered tales of love and loss as a local man, Joseph Xuereb, was sentenced to two years in prison and fined €7,000 for harassing his ex-partner. The case has through the close-knit community, serving as a stark reminder of the dark side of love.
Love Turned Sour in the Heart of Mdina
Mdina, the silent city, has witnessed countless love stories unfold within its ancient walls. Yet, this tale is far from romantic. Joseph Xuereb, a 35-year-old resident of Mdina, found himself on the wrong side of the law after a bitter breakup. His ex-partner, a 32-year-old woman, had moved on, but Xuereb couldn’t let go. His relentless pursuit of her affection turned into a nightmare she couldn’t escape.
For over a year, Xuereb subjected his former partner to a relentless campaign of harassment. He would wait outside her workplace, a small boutique on Strait Street, a popular locale in Valletta known for its vibrant nightlife, but now a hub of local businesses. He would call her repeatedly, sometimes over 50 times a day, despite her pleas for him to stop. He even went as far as sending her threatening messages, leaving her terrified and unable to move on with her life.
Justice Served in the Courts of Malta
The victim finally gathered the courage to report Xuereb to the police. The case was heard at the Criminal Court in Valletta, where Xuereb was found guilty of harassment and using threatening language. Judge Abigail Lofaro delivered the sentence, stating, “Harassment is a serious crime that can have devastating effects on the victim’s mental and emotional well-being.”
Xuereb’s sentence sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated in Maltese society. It’s a reminder that while heartbreak is a part of life, harassment and threats are not acceptable ways to cope with it.
As Xuereb begins his sentence, his ex-partner is left to pick up the pieces. She’s grateful for the justice served but knows the road to recovery will be long. She hopes her story serves as a warning to others in similar situations, encouraging them to seek help and report such behavior.
