Teen’s Fake Kidnapping Prank Terrifies Rabat Taxi Driver

In an unusual turn of events, a 19-year-old Maltese teenager admitted to police that he had orchestrated a fake kidnapping, involving a local taxi driver and a staged ransom demand. The incident, which unfolded in the bustling streets of Rabat, left the cabbie shaken but unharmed.

Staging a Crime: A Teen’s Prank Gone Wrong

The teenager, identified only as ‘M’ by the police, confessed to setting up the elaborate hoax. His plan was to make it seem like he was being kidnapped, with the taxi driver as an unwitting accomplice. He hoped that his family would pay a ransom, and he could keep the money. The teen’s motive? A misguided attempt to run away from home and start a new life.

Rabat’s Taxi Driver: An Unwitting Actor

The taxi driver, a 55-year-old man from Rabat, was understandably distressed. He had been flagged down by ‘M’ on Triq San Pawl in Rabat, with the teen appearing disheveled and distressed. ‘M’ then allegedly forced the driver at knifepoint to drive to a secluded location in Mgarr, where he demanded that the driver call ‘M”s family and demand a ransom.

Luckily, the taxi driver managed to alert the police during the call, leading to a swift response and the teenager’s eventual arrest. The police, upon searching ‘M”s home in Msida, found a knife and a script detailing the fake kidnapping.

Lessons Learned: The Serious Side of Pranks

While ‘M’ may have thought he was pulling off a harmless prank, the consequences could have been severe. Fake kidnappings are a serious crime, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 12 years. the emotional trauma inflicted on the taxi driver and ‘M”s family was significant.

Inspector Joe Magro from the Rabat Police Station commented, “This was a dangerous and foolish stunt. We’re grateful it didn’t end in tragedy. We urge anyone with grievances to seek help, not create harm.”

As for ‘M’, he faces charges of false imprisonment, threats, and causing criminal damage. His case will be heard in court soon, where the full extent of his actions will be considered.
