Truck Inferno on Marfa Road

Smoke Signal on Marfa: Truck Inferno Halts Traffic

Drivers on Marfa Road got an unexpected, smoky interlude to their commute yesterday afternoon. A truck, laden with goods, transformed into a fiery spectacle, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving motorists agape.

Blaze on the Road

The incident occurred around 2 PM, as the truck, belonging to local logistics company MaltaTrans, was making its way along Marfa Road. Witnesses described a sudden burst of flames from the truck’s engine, quickly engulfing the vehicle. “It was like something out of a movie,” said Joe Borg, a nearby resident who captured the scene on his phone.

Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from as far as Msida and Birkirkara. The fire spread rapidly, with flames leaping high and licking the sides of the truck. The driver, thankfully unharmed, managed to pull over and escape the burning vehicle.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

Fire services were swift to respond, with two tenders from the Marsa Fire Station arriving within minutes. Firefighters battled the intense flames, eventually managing to extinguish the blaze after about 45 minutes. The charred remains of the truck were left smoldering on the side of the road, a stark reminder of the afternoon’s drama.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early indications suggest it may have been due to an engine malfunction. MaltaTrans has assured the public that they are cooperating fully with the authorities and have launched their own internal investigation.

Traffic on Marfa Road was severely disrupted, with tailbacks stretching all the way to the Birkirkara bypass. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes, with many taking to social media to express their frustration at the delays.

Lessons Learned

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on our roads. Regular vehicle maintenance and safety checks are crucial to prevent such incidents. It also of having well-equipped and responsive emergency services, something that Malta can certainly be proud of.

As for the driver, he was understandably shaken but unharmed. “I’ve never been so scared in my life,” he said, “But I’m just glad I could get out in time.”
