Two Workers Plunge Down Birkirkara Shaft
Imagine, if you will, the chilling scene that unfolded at a construction site in Birkirkara. Two workers, mere inches from the edge of an apartment block shaft, suddenly lost their footing. They tumbled down, disappearing into the gaping hole, their cries echoing off the cold, hard walls.
An Unthinkable Accident
The incident occurred at a building site on Triq San Ġużepp, a bustling street in the heart of Birkirkara. The workers, both in their 30s, were employed by a local construction company. They were installing reinforcement bars in the shaft when tragedy struck. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with colleagues rushing to the edge, shouting down into the darkness, desperate for any sign of life.
Rescue Efforts and Aftermath
Emergency services arrived swiftly, with the Civil Protection Department’s technical rescue team leading the operation. They rappelled down the shaft, some 15 meters deep, to reach the injured workers. Both men were conscious but injured, with one suffering a suspected broken leg and the other complaining of back pain. They were carefully extricated and transported to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.
The incident has through the local construction community. Safety measures at the site are now under scrutiny, with investigations underway by both the police and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority. The construction company has issued a statement expressing their sympathies and promising a full investigation.
Safety in the Spotlight
This accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by workers in the construction industry. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, the sector has one of the highest injury rates. In Malta, the situation is no different. The Malta Union of Construction Workers has called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and better training for workers.
As we await the results of the investigations, one thing is clear: the safety of our workers should always be our top priority. It’s not just about following regulations; it’s about ensuring that every worker goes home safe to their families at the end of the day.
