Floating Padel Court Proposed in Marsa
Barging In: A Paddle Battle in Marsa
Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but floating on the waters of Marsa. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic movie, but a proposal submitted by a local ship repair company. The company has applied to set up a temporary padel court on a barge in the Marsa Industrial Estate, sparking a debate that’s anything but calm.
Courts on Water: A Novel Concept
Padel, a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, has been gaining traction in Malta. With courts popping up across the island, from Msida to Mosta, the idea of a floating court is raising eyebrows. The company, Marsa Shipyards Ltd., has proposed to install the court on a barge in the Marsa dockyard, offering a unique perspective of the Grand Harbour.
Striking a Balance: Sport vs. Industry
While some welcome the novel concept, others question the balance between sport and industry. Marsa, an industrial hub, is home to various businesses, including shipyards, factories, and warehouses. The proposed padel court has sparked a conversation about the co-existence of different activities in the same space.
Environmental concerns have also been raised. “We need to consider the impact on the marine ecosystem,” says Dr. Joseph Attard, a local marine biologist. “While the court is temporary, the potential disruption to marine life should not be overlooked.”
The Planning Authority is currently reviewing the application. A public consultation is expected to take place, giving residents and stakeholders a chance to voice their opinions. “We encourage everyone to participate in the process,” says a PA spokesperson. “This is an opportunity to discuss the future of Marsa and how we can balance different uses of our spaces.”
