New Apostolic Nuncio Mgr Wojciech Załuski Arrives in Malta: A Warm Welcome and a New Chapter
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the Grand Harbour, a new chapter in the Catholic Church’s diplomatic mission to Malta began. Mgr Wojciech Załuski, the new Apostolic Nuncio to Malta, stepped off the plane at Malta International Airport, ready to take up his post as the Holy See’s representative on our islands.
A Seasoned Diplomat in a Familiar Land
Born in Poland, Mgr Załuski is no stranger to Malta. He served as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Polish Embassy in Valletta from 2004 to 2009. This time, however, he arrives not as a diplomat representing his homeland, but as the Apostolic Nuncio, a role that places him at the intersection of Church and State.
His appointment comes at a time when the Catholic Church in Malta is grappling with challenges and opportunities. From the ongoing debate around divorce and LGBTQ+ rights to the Church’s role in education and social welfare, Mgr Załuski’s tenure promises to be both interesting and impactful.
A Man of the People, a Shepherd of the Flock
In his first public address after his arrival, Mgr Załuski spoke of his joy at returning to Malta and his eagerness to serve the local Church. “I am here to serve the people of Malta and Gozo,” he said, “to be a shepherd to the flock, guiding and supporting them in their faith journey.”
His words were welcomed by Maltese Catholics, who see in him a familiar face and a man of the people. “We’re glad to have him back,” said Maria, a regular at the Sunday mass at the Mosta Parish Church. “He’s always been approachable and understanding. I think he’ll do great things for our Church.”
: A New Chapter Unfolds
As Mgr Załuski settles into his new role, one thing is clear: the Catholic Church in Malta is entering a new chapter. With his wealth of diplomatic experience and his deep understanding of the Maltese people, the new Apostolic Nuncio is set to play a significant role in shaping the future of the Church on our islands.
As he takes up residence at the Apostolic Nunciature in Floriana, Mgr Załuski will be looking out over the city that has become a second home to him. The challenges and opportunities that lie ahead will be met with the same warmth and resilience that Malta has always shown.
As one Maltese priest put it, “We welcome Mgr Załuski with open arms. We’re ready to walk this path with him, whatever it may bring.”
