Gaza Flotilla Activists: Malta, We Need Your Voice

Gaza Flotilla Activists Speak Out: “Malta, We Need Your Voice”

Imagine being held in detention for weeks, your fate uncertain, all for trying to deliver aid to a besieged population. This was the reality for a group of activists, including some with Maltese connections, who were part of the recent Gaza flotilla. They’ve since been released, but the memories of their ordeal linger, and they’re calling on Malta to speak up.

From Valletta to Gaza

Among the activists was Malta-based Italian national, Claudio Balestra. A regular visitor to Malta, Claudio was drawn to the cause after seeing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza firsthand. “I’ve been to Malta many times,” he says, “and I’ve always admired its commitment to human rights. I hoped that Malta would stand with us in this fight for justice.”

Claudio and his fellow activists set sail from Italy in late June, carrying medical supplies and other aid. Their plan was to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, a move Israel has long criticized. But they never made it. Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, detaining the activists and seizing their ships.

Detention: A “Living Nightmare”

For the next 22 days, Claudio and the others were held in Israeli detention. They were denied access to lawyers and family, and subjected to what they describe as harsh and inhumane conditions. “It was like a living nightmare,” Claudio recalls. “We were treated like criminals, despite our peaceful intentions.”

Malta’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed that it had been in touch with the activists during their detention, offering consular assistance. But Claudio and his fellow activists argue that Malta could have done more. “We need Malta to use its voice, to pressure Israel to lift the blockade and allow aid to reach Gaza,” he says.

Back in Malta, Calls for Action

Now back in Malta, Claudio and others are speaking out about their experience, hoping to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza. They’re calling on the Maltese government to take a stronger stance on the issue, and on ordinary Maltese to join the cause. “Malta has always been a beacon of hope and justice,” says Claudio. “We need that beacon to shine now, more than ever.”
