Gozo Divers Rescue Fellow Diver in Xlendi Bay
In the crystal-clear waters off Xlendi Bay, Gozo, a dramatic rescue unfolded yesterday as local divers sprang into action to save a fellow diver in distress.
Dive Boat Calls for Help
The incident began around 11:30 am when a dive boat, ‘Seawolf’, raised the alarm. Onboard was a group of divers from the Malta Diving School, enjoying a day of exploration in the azure depths. Among them was an experienced diver who, unbeknownst to his companions, was struggling with an equipment malfunction.
Local Divers Answer the Call
Hearing the distress call, nearby dive boats rushed to assist. Among the first to arrive were divers from ‘Blue Fin’, a Gozo-based dive centre. “We were just finishing our dive when we heard the call,” said Mark Xuereb, a Blue Fin instructor. “We knew we had to help.”
Mark and his team quickly ascended and made their way towards the Seawolf. They found the distressed diver, his air supply compromised, struggling to stay afloat. Without hesitation, they sprang into action, providing the diver with their own air supply and guiding him safely back to the surface.
Rescue and Aftermath
The rescued diver, a 45-year-old man from the UK, was taken to Gozo General Hospital as a precaution. He was treated for mild hypothermia and released later that day. “I owe those divers my life,” he said, grateful for the quick thinking and bravery of his rescuers.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking beneath the waves, even for experienced divers. It also of regular equipment checks and the value of diving with experienced, local operators who prioritize safety.
For those planning to dive in Maltese waters, consider booking with reputable dive centres like Malta Diving School or Blue Fin. They not only offer top-notch equipment and training but also foster a strong sense of community, as yesterday’s rescue so vividly demonstrated.
