The incident, which took place in the quiet residential street of Triq il-Kuncizzjoni in Birkirkara, has through the usually peaceful neighborhood.

The Night of Terror

On the fateful night of October 15, 2021, the victim, a 55-year-old man, was at home with his wife and teenage daughter when three masked men, one of them being the convicted man, forced their way into the family’s home. Armed with a gun and a knife, they tied up the family and proceeded to ransack the house, stealing valuable items including jewelry and electronics.

The family was held hostage for over two hours, during which they were subjected to verbal threats and physical abuse. The daughter, then 16, was particularly traumatized by the experience, with her father describing her as ‘a shell of her former self’ in court.

Following a lengthy investigation by the Malta Police Force, the three suspects were arrested and charged with armed robbery, aggravated burglary, and causing criminal damage. Yesterday’s sentencing marks the culmination of over a year of legal proceedings, bringing some measure of closure to the victim and his family.

Presiding Judge, Mr. Justice Joseph Azzopardi, described the crime as ‘a heinous act that has left indelible marks on the victims’ lives.’ He added, ‘The court cannot turn a blind eye to such brazen acts of violence. The sentence imposed today sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated in our society.’

The convicted man, a 32-year-old from Birkirkara, showed no remorse throughout the trial. He will serve his sentence at the Corradino Correctional Facility. The other two suspects are still awaiting sentencing.
