Padel Court on a Barge: Marsa’s Next Big Thing?
Barging In: A New Ball Game in Marsa?
Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but floating on the waters of Marsa. This isn’t a scene from a sci-fi movie, but a proposal submitted by a local ship repair company. The company, based in the heart of Marsa, has applied to set up a padel court on a barge, right in the middle of the Grand Harbour.
What’s Padel, You Ask?
Padel, for the uninitiated, is a sport that’s been sweeping Malta by storm. It’s a mix between squash and tennis, played on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court. It’s fast-paced, social, and easy to pick up. But on a barge? That’s a first, even for Malta.
Marsa: A New Padel Hotspot?
Marsa, once known primarily for its industrial hub, is transforming. With the Three Cities undergoing regeneration, and the upcoming Three Cities Bridge project, Marsa is set to become a new hotspot. This padel court on a barge could be another feather in its cap, attracting sports enthusiasts and tourists alike.
But not everyone’s thrilled. Environmental concerns have been raised. “Marsa is already dealing with water pollution issues,” says Dr. Joseph Borg, a local environmentalist. “We need to ensure that any new development, even something as seemingly innocuous as a padel court, doesn’t exacerbate these problems.”
The company, however, assures that the barge will be equipped with eco-friendly features. “We’re looking at solar panels for energy, and a rainwater harvesting system for court maintenance,” says the company’s spokesperson. “We want to make this a sustainable, green addition to Marsa’s skyline.”
The Planning Authority is now reviewing the application. If approved, it could pave the way for more unique, water-based leisure activities in Malta. But for now, it’s a waiting game. One thing’s for sure, though – Malta’s never been one to shy away from a challenge, or a game of padel, for that matter.
