Malta Stands with Venezuela After Devastating Quakes
Malta’s Solidarity as Quakes Devastate Venezuela
Malta’s flag was lowered to half-mast today, a somber gesture of solidarity with Venezuela as the South American nation grapples with the aftermath of twin earthquakes that have claimed at least 164 lives. The magnitude 6.5 and 5.8 tremors, striking within hours of each other, have toppled buildings, left thousands homeless, and of grief across the region.
Malta’s Response: More Than Sympathy
In St. Julian’s, the heart of Malta’s tourist hub, the Maltese government’s response has been swift and compassionate. Foreign Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo announced that Malta is sending €50,000 in immediate aid to support relief efforts. “Malta stands with Venezuela in these difficult times,” he said, speaking outside the Ministry’s offices on Triq San Giljan.
This isn’t the first time Malta has reached out to Venezuela in times of crisis. In 2019, when political unrest gripped the country, Malta provided humanitarian aid, demonstrating a commitment to supporting its Latin American counterparts.
Malta’s Venezuelan Community: United in Grief
Malta’s small but vibrant Venezuelan community has been deeply affected. Many have taken to social media, sharing stories of loved ones lost and homes destroyed. “It’s like a part of us is back there, suffering,” said Maria Rodriguez, a Venezuelan expat living in Msida. “But we’re also grateful to be here, to see the Maltese people’s support.”
Community leaders are organizing fundraisers and awareness campaigns, with plans to donate proceeds to relief efforts. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for this Friday at the Msida Bastion Gardens, a poignant symbol of unity and solidarity.
As Malta’s flag continues to fly at half-mast, it serves as a stark reminder of the devastation thousands of miles away. Yet, it also stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of international solidarity in the face of tragedy.
