Malta’s New Bus Routes: Chaos to Convenience?
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Kick In Today
Commuters across Malta woke up to a different reality this morning as the Public Transport Services regulator announced new bus routes, effective immediately. The changes, aimed at improving efficiency and connectivity, have led to some unexpected traffic snarls and confusion at bus stops.
What’s Changed?
The new routes, dubbed ‘Malta Moves’, have seen several bus services rerouted, merged, or extended. Notably, the popular X3 route, which plied the Sliema to St. Julian’s corridor, has been extended to reach the Three Cities. Meanwhile, the 109 route has been rerouted to serve the industrial estate in Marsa, a move welcomed by workers but causing some congestion in the area.
At the core of these changes is the introduction of the new ‘Circle Malta’ route, a circular service that connects major towns and cities, including Valletta, Birkirkara, Msida, and Sliema. The service, operated by new electric buses, is expected to significantly reduce travel times and encourage public transport use.
Reactions and Challenges
While many commuters have praised the initiative, others have expressed frustration with the sudden changes. “I’ve been waiting for the 44 to Msida for 20 minutes, and it hasn’t shown up yet,” complained Maria, a student at the University of Malta. “I had no idea they’d changed the route.”
Traffic wardens and police officers have been deployed at key bus stops and junctions to assist commuters and manage traffic. “It’s a learning curve for everyone,” said a police officer stationed at the Sliema Ferries bus stop. “But we’re here to help, so don’t hesitate to ask if you’re unsure about the new routes.”
In a statement, the Public Transport Services regulator acknowledged teething problems but expressed confidence that the new routes would soon become the norm. “We understand that these changes may cause some initial disruption,” the statement read. “But we’re committed to making public transport in Malta more efficient and sustainable.”
