Malta Unites in Solidarity as Venezuela Quakes Death Toll Rises

Malta’s Solidarity as Quakes Devastate Venezuela

As I sit here in the heart of Valletta, the bustling streets of our capital a stark contrast to the stillness that must have fallen over Venezuela’s towns, I can’t help but feel a pang of solidarity with our fellow Latin Americans. The twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Tuesday, leaving at least 164 dead and thousands injured, have across the globe, literally and metaphorically.

Malta’s Latin American Community United

Malta’s Latin American community, numbering around 3,000, has been quick to respond. I spoke to Maria, a Chilean woman who has called Malta home for the past decade. She told me, “It’s like a piece of your heart is broken. We might be far away, but we’re all connected.” The community has been rallying together, setting up collection points at the Latin American Embassy and various community centers across the island.

In the heart of Ħamrun, the Latin American Embassy has been a hive of activity. Ambassador Jorge Mario Rodriguez told me, “We’re overwhelmed by the support. Maltese people have shown us immense solidarity.” The embassy is accepting donations of clothing, food, and monetary contributions to aid the relief efforts.

Malta’s Response: More Than Just Donations

But Malta’s response goes beyond just donations. The Maltese government has pledged €100,000 in aid, with Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo stating, “Malta stands in solidarity with Venezuela during this difficult time.” Locally, churches across the island have been holding special masses and prayer services for the victims.

Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a Maltese doctor working in Venezuela, has been providing regular updates on the situation. He told me, “The need is immense. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and many people are still trapped under rubble.” His updates have been a stark reminder of the devastation, but also a testament to the resilience of the Venezuelan people.

As we watch the news footage of toppled buildings and families searching for loved ones, it’s easy to feel helpless. But here in Malta, we’re showing that even from thousands of miles away, we can make a difference. So, if you’re in Malta and want to help, head down to the Latin American Embassy in Ħamrun. Every little bit helps.
