Flames Lick Marfa Road: Truck Inferno Causes Traffic Chaos

Drivers on Marfa Road were met with an unexpected spectacle yesterday afternoon as a truck, laden with cargo, went up in flames, causing traffic chaos and raising concerns about road safety. The incident, which occurred around 3 PM, saw the truck, a red Volvo FH16, engulfed in a towering blaze that could be seen from afar, including the nearby St. George’s Bay.

Quick Response from Fire Services

The Malta Fire Authority (MFA) was quick to respond, dispatching three tenders and a rescue tender to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the truck well alight, with flames leaping high into the air. Despite the intense heat, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within 45 minutes, preventing it from spreading to nearby vehicles or causing further damage.

No injuries were reported, but the truck was completely destroyed. The driver, a 45-year-old man from Birkirkara, was treated for shock at the scene but refused further medical attention. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he told Hot Malta, still shaken by the ordeal. “One minute I was driving, the next, my truck was a fireball.”

Traffic Nightmare and Road Safety Concerns

The incident caused significant traffic disruption, with Marfa Road closed in both directions for several hours. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes, leading to congestion on nearby streets like Triq San Giljan and Triq it-Turisti. Commuters using public transport also faced delays, with several bus routes diverted.

Road safety advocates have since raised concerns about the incident, questioning whether more could have been done to prevent it. “We need to review our road safety measures, especially for heavy vehicles,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Road Safety Council. “This could have been much worse. We’re lucky no one was seriously injured.”

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with early indications suggesting it may have been caused by an electrical fault. The truck’s owner, a local logistics company, has declined to comment pending the outcome of the investigation.

In the meantime, residents and commuters are urged to exercise caution on Marfa Road and other major thoroughfares, especially during peak travel times. Let’s make sure that yesterday’s fiery spectacle remains a one-off and not a sign of things to come.
