Two Workers Plunge Down Apartment Block Shaft in Msida
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Msida, a chilling scene unfolded yesterday as two workers plunged down an open shaft at an under-construction apartment block, leaving the usually vibrant street hushed and stunned.
Rescue Operation at Triq San Pawl
Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 11:30 AM, where the two men had fallen some 15 meters down a shaft at a construction site on Triq San Pawl. The street, a major thoroughfare connecting Msida to Birkirkara, was quickly cordoned off as firefighters, paramedics, and police launched a coordinated rescue operation.
Community in Shock
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with many passersby stopping to watch as rescue teams worked tirelessly to reach the trapped workers. “I was walking my dog when I heard the commotion,” said Maria, a Msida resident. “To see something like this happen right here, it’s just terrible.”
Workers Hospitalised
Both workers were eventually rescued and transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where they remain in stable condition. The Malta Union of Construction Workers has since issued a statement, expressing concern over the incident and calling for stricter safety measures on construction sites.
This incident comes amidst ongoing debates about construction safety and workers’ rights in Malta. With numerous construction projects ongoing across the island, particularly in urban areas like Msida, the question of worker safety has once again been brought to the fore.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Malta Police and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority. Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as more details emerge.
