Two Workers Plunge Down Msida Apartment Shaft
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Msida, an eerie silence descended upon the busy street as two workers plummeted down an apartment block’s shaft, leaving the neighbourhood in shock and raising questions about safety measures on construction sites.
Plunge into Darkness
The incident occurred at around 10:30 AM on Tuesday, at a construction site on Triq San Pawl in Msida. The two workers, both in their 30s, were reportedly installing an elevator shaft when a platform gave way, sending them tumbling down the empty shaft. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with workers rushing to secure the area and emergency services racing to the scene.
Rescue and Aftermath
Fire and Rescue Services, along with an ambulance, arrived promptly. The workers, thankfully, were found alive but trapped 15 meters below ground level. A complex rescue operation ensued, involving firefighters abseiling down the shaft to reach the injured men. After a tense hour, both workers were successfully rescued and transferred to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. Their conditions were described as stable, with non-life-threatening injuries.
Safety Concerns and Investigations
The incident has sparked concerns about safety measures on construction sites, particularly in Malta’s rapidly developing real estate sector. The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) has launched an investigation, focusing on the platform’s structural integrity and whether safety protocols were adhered to. Neighbours and locals have also raised questions about the lack of safety barriers around the site, which they argue could have prevented the accident.
In the meantime, the construction company has suspended operations at the site pending the investigation’s outcome. The company’s spokesperson expressed their relief that the workers’ injuries were not life-threatening, extending their support to the affected families.
