47 Hospitalised in Mass Food Poisoning Incident
47 Hospitalised in Mystery Food Poisoning Outbreak
In a sudden turn of events, 47 people were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital yesterday afternoon, all complaining of similar symptoms – nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The suspected culprit? A mass catering event at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta.
An Afternoon of Celebration Turns Sour
The incident occurred during a corporate event, where attendees had lunch at the historic venue. By 3 PM, emergency services were flooded with calls, with reports of guests falling ill en masse. Within hours, the number of affected individuals had climbed to 47, with some requiring intensive care.
Investigation Launched
The Health Department has launched an investigation, with inspectors visiting the MCC and the catering company involved. Samples of the food served have been taken for testing. Dr. Charmaine Gauci, Superintendent of Public Health, urged anyone who attended the event and is feeling unwell to seek medical attention.
“We’re treating this as a suspected case of food poisoning,” she said. “We’re working closely with the catering company and the MCC to establish the cause and prevent any further spread.”
This is not the first time Malta has grappled with a mass food poisoning incident. In 2018, over 100 people fell ill after consuming contaminated food at a wedding in Mgarr. The incident highlighted the need for stringent food safety measures, a lesson that seems to have resurfaced today.
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear – the incident has through Malta’s catering industry. With the summer season approaching, event organisers and caterers are left wondering, “Could this happen at our next event?”
For now, the focus is on treating those affected and getting to the bottom of this mystery. As Dr. Gauci put it, “Our priority is ensuring the safety of the public. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious symptoms.”
