Birkirkara Family’s Nightmare: Armed Robber Jailed for Eight Years

In the early hours of a chilly January morning, a quiet residential street in Birkirkara was shattered by the sound of breaking glass and desperate cries for help. The peaceful façade of Malta’s most populous town was disrupted by a violent armed robbery that would leave a family terrorised and a community on edge.

Armed and Dangerous

The man behind the mask that night was 32-year-old Joseph Xuereb. Armed with a knife and a gun, he forced his way into the home of a local family, tying up the parents and threatening their two young children. The family’s pet dog, sensing the danger, was brutally attacked and killed in the struggle. Xuereb then proceeded to ransack the house, making off with a substantial sum of money and valuable items.

Neighbours, roused by the commotion, quickly called the police. Xuereb, however, was long gone by the time they arrived, leaving behind a scene of chaos and fear. The family, traumatised and shaken, were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment, where they were fortunately found to be physically unharmed, although the psychological impact would linger.

Caught and Convicted

Xuereb’s reign of terror was short-lived. Thanks to swift police work and CCTV footage, he was identified and arrested within days. The stolen goods were recovered, and Xuereb was charged with armed robbery, aggravated burglary, and causing criminal damage. The court heard how Xuereb, with a string of previous convictions, had targeted the family believing them to be wealthy, planning the robbery down to the smallest detail.

In a packed courtroom, the family bravely faced Xuereb, recounting the night’s events and the lasting impact on their lives. The judge, clearly moved by their testimony, sentenced Xuereb to eight years in prison. The court also ordered Xuereb to pay the family €10,000 in compensation, a small sum compared to the trauma inflicted but a symbol of justice served.

Community Response and Prevention

News of the robbery through Birkirkara and beyond. Neighbourhood watch groups sprang up, and residents began to look out for one another. The local council organised community meetings, inviting police to discuss crime prevention strategies. Streetlights were improved, and CCTV coverage was expanded, turning Birkirkara into a safer, more vigilant community.

Malta Police also launched a public awareness campaign, ‘Secure Your Home’, offering practical advice on home security. From installing timers for lights to using secure locks and keeping valuables out of sight, the campaign aimed to make homes less attractive to burglars. The message was clear: together, we can make our communities safer.

As Xuereb begins his sentence, the family he terrorised is slowly rebuilding their lives. They have moved to a new home, seeking a fresh start and peace of mind. Their story serves as a stark reminder of the real human cost of crime and the importance of community vigilance.

In the words of the family’s spokesperson, “We want people to know that we’re not just a statistic. We’re a family who lived through a nightmare, and we’re fighting to reclaim our lives. We hope that by sharing our story, we can help prevent others from going through the same ordeal.”
