Padel Court on a Barge: Marsa’s Novel Proposal

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not nestled in a Maltese backyard or perched atop a Paceville rooftop, but bobbing gently on the waters of Marsa. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic film, but a proposal currently under consideration by the Malta Maritime Authority (MMA).

From Ship Repair to Sports: A Novel Idea

Maritime Services Ltd, a ship repair company based in Marsa, has applied to the MMA for a permit to install a padel court on a barge. The barge, moored in the Marsamxett Harbour, would provide a unique setting for the popular sport, offering seafaring enthusiasts and sports lovers alike a novel experience.

This unconventional idea is not without its challenges. The MMA is currently evaluating the proposal, considering factors such as safety, accessibility, and environmental impact. “It’s a first for us,” admits a spokesperson, “but we’re open to innovative ideas that respect our maritime regulations.”

Padel by the Sea: A Boon or a Bane?

Reactions from the local community have been mixed. Some welcome the idea of a unique sports facility, while others express concerns about potential noise pollution and safety issues. “I think it’s a great idea,” says Joe, a Marsa resident. “It would be something different, a talking point for the area.” However, Maria, another resident, worries, “I’m not sure about the noise. We already have enough with the traffic and the ships.”

Environmentalists also have their eyes on the proposal. “We’re monitoring the situation,” says a spokesperson for BirdLife Malta. “We need to ensure that this project doesn’t negatively impact the local ecosystem.”

If approved, the padel court could be operational by late 2023. Maritime Services Ltd declined to comment further, stating that the project is still in its early stages.
