Floating Padel Court: Marsa’s Next Big Thing?
Barging In: A Paddle Battle in Marsa
Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but floating on the water in Marsa. This isn’t a dream sequence from a sci-fi movie, but a reality that could soon be a part of Malta’s unique scene. A local ship repair company has applied for a permit to set up a padel court on a barge in Marsa.
Padel: The Sport That’s Taking Malta by Storm
For the uninitiated, padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. It’s played in doubles on an enclosed court, with walls surrounding the playing area. The sport has gained immense popularity in Malta in recent years, with courts popping up all over the island. But a floating padel court? That’s a first.
Marsa: A Port Town on the Verge
Marsa, Malta’s main port town, is no stranger to innovation. From its industrial past to its burgeoning cultural scene, Marsa has always been a town of contrasts. A floating padel court could be just the latest addition to this eclectic mix. But not everyone is thrilled about the idea.
“While we welcome innovation, we’re concerned about the environmental impact,” says Joe Borg, a long-time Marsa resident. “Marsa is already dealing with water pollution issues. We need to ensure that this project doesn’t exacerbate the problem.”
The company behind the project, however, insists that the barge will be eco-friendly. “We’re using a solar-powered barge and we’ll ensure that all waste is properly disposed of,” says a spokesperson for the company. “We see this as an opportunity to bring something new and exciting to Marsa, while also being mindful of the environment.”
if this unique project gets the green light. But one thing’s for sure: Malta’s love affair with padel is showing no signs of slowing down. Whether it’s on land or sea, expect to see more of this fast-paced sport in the coming years.
