Floating Padel Court Proposed for Marsa

Barging In: A Padel Court Afloat in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but bobbing gently on the waves in Marsa. It’s not a mirage, but a proposal by a local ship repair company that’s got everyone talking. The company, Mediterranean Marine, has applied to the Planning Authority to set up a floating padel court on a barge in the Marsa Industrial Estate.

Why Marsa, You Ask?

Marsa, Malta’s industrial heartland, might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of sports facilities. But the company has its reasons. Mediterranean Marine’s yard is located right by the sea, and a floating court would make the most of this waterfront location. Plus, it could provide a unique sporting experience for players and spectators alike.

Floating Fun or Floating Flop?

Reaction to the proposal has been, well, mixed. Some welcome the innovative idea, seeing it as a novel way to make use of Malta’s limited space. Others worry about safety, noise pollution, and the visual impact on the area. The Planning Authority is currently considering the application, so it’s not a done deal yet.

If approved, the padel court would be the first of its kind in Malta. It’s not just a court, but a whole floating structure that would include changing rooms, a bar, and even a terrace for spectators. The barge would be anchored in place, with access via a gangway from the shore.

But not everyone’s thrilled. Some Marsa residents worry about the noise, especially at night. Others question the wisdom of putting a sports facility in an industrial area. “It’s not exactly a picturesque setting,” one resident told us, “And I’m not sure how safe it would be, especially for kids.”

Mediterranean Marine, however, is confident that the padel court would be a boon for the area. “It would bring life to the area, especially in the evenings,” a spokesperson told us. “And it’s not like we’re building a skyscraper. It’s a barge, it’s temporary, and it can be moved if needed.”

So, what do you think, Malta? Is a floating padel court a brilliant idea or a bridge too far? Let us know in the comments. And if you’ve got any other novel ideas for making the most of Malta’s limited space, we’d love to hear them!
