Man Jailed 8 Years for Violent Armed Robbery and Home Invasion

In the early hours of a quiet Sunday morning, a peaceful residential street in Birkirkara was shattered by the sound of breaking glass and desperate screams. The tranquility was disrupted by a violent armed robbery and home invasion that left a family terrified and a man now behind bars for eight years.

Armed Robbery and Home Invasion

On that fateful morning, a group of masked men, armed with knives and hammers, stormed into the home of the X family. The victims, a couple in their forties and their teenage son, were asleep when the intruders forced their way in through a window, leaving a trail of shattered glass and fear in their wake.

The gang, led by 33-year-old Maltese national, Joseph Camilleri, proceeded to tie up the family and ransack their home. They made off with a substantial amount of cash, jewelry, and electronics, leaving the family shaken and traumatized.

Arrest and Trial

Thanks to the quick response of the police and eyewitness accounts, Camilleri and his accomplices were arrested within hours of the incident. The police recovered most of the stolen items and enough evidence to build a strong case against the perpetrators.

Camilleri, who had a string of previous convictions, stood trial for the offence earlier this year. The court heard how he had masterminded the robbery, providing the weapons and planning the details of the invasion. The court also heard harrowing testimony from the victims, detailing the terror they experienced that morning.

Sentencing

Last week, Mr. Justice Joseph Azzopardi delivered his verdict, sentencing Camilleri to eight years in prison. The judge noted the severity of the crime, the trauma inflicted on the victims, and Camilleri’s criminal history in passing sentence. He also ordered Camilleri to pay €10,000 in compensation to the X family.

When asked for a comment, Mr. X, the husband and father who was victimized, said, “We’re relieved that justice has been served. No sentence can undo the trauma we went through, but we hope that this sends a strong message to anyone considering such crimes.”
