Man Jailed 8 Years for Violent Armed Robbery, Home Invasion in Birkirkara
In the early hours of a quiet Malta morning, a peaceful residential street in Birkirkara was shattered by the sound of breaking glass and desperate cries for help. The tranquility was disrupted by a violent armed robbery that left a family terrified and a community on edge.
The Violent Home Invasion
The victim, a 55-year-old man, was asleep in his home on Triq il-Kunvent when he was awoken by intruders. Two masked men, armed with a knife and a gun, forced their way into the house, binding the man and his wife before ransacking their home. The couple was held at knifepoint for over an hour as the robbers made off with valuable items, including jewelry and electronics.
The ordeal ended when the robbers fled the scene, leaving the couple traumatized but physically unharmed. The man immediately contacted the police, setting off a chain of events that would lead to an eight-year prison sentence for one of the intruders.
Catching the Culprit
The Malta Police Force swiftly responded to the incident, securing the crime scene and launching an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby homes and businesses was reviewed, and witness statements were taken. A breakthrough came when a neighbor reported seeing a suspicious vehicle in the area around the time of the robbery.
The car was traced back to a 32-year-old man from Msida, who was subsequently arrested and charged with armed robbery, aggravated burglary, and assault. The man, who had a history of petty crime, confessed to his involvement in the robbery and led police to the location of the stolen items.
Justice Served
After a lengthy trial, the man was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to eight years in prison. The sentence was welcomed by the local community, who had rallied around the victim and his family, offering support and demanding justice.
Speaking to Hot Malta, the victim’s neighbor, Joseph Xuereb, said, “We’re relieved that justice has been served. No one should have to go through what they experienced. We hope this sentence sends a strong message to anyone thinking of committing such a crime.”
In a statement, the Malta Police Force reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining public safety and bringing criminals to justice. “We will not tolerate such violent and brazen crimes in our community. Our thoughts are with the victims, and we hope this sentence brings them some measure of closure.”
