KM Malta’s Missing Accounts: What’s the Airline Hiding?
KM Malta’s Accounts: A No-Show at the Register
Malta’s Registry of Companies has been left scratching its head, or so it seems, as KM Malta’s financial accounts have gone MIA. Again. The budget airline, which has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, has once again failed to file its annual accounts on time. This isn’t the first time KM Malta has missed the deadline, and it’s got people wondering – what’s the airline hiding?
When Deadlines Turn into Ghostlines
According to the Companies Act, all companies registered in Malta are required to file their annual accounts with the Registry of Companies by the end of the sixth month following the end of their financial year. KM Malta’s financial year-end is December 31st, which means their accounts should have been filed by June 30th at the latest. Yet, here we are, mid-July, and still no sign of those accounts.
This isn’t the first time KM Malta has missed the deadline. In fact, the airline has a history of tardiness when it comes to filing its accounts. In 2020, KM Malta’s accounts were filed a whole five months late. When asked about the delay, a spokesperson for the airline attributed it to the COVID-19 pandemic. But with the pandemic showing signs of easing, excuses are wearing thin.
More Than Just a Missed Deadline
While a missed deadline might seem like a minor infraction, it’s the tip of the iceberg when it comes to KM Malta’s recent woes. The airline has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons lately, from flight cancellations and delays to safety concerns and staff unrest. The absence of its accounts only serves to fuel speculation about the airline’s financial health and its ability to weather the storm.
the lack of transparency is raising eyebrows among industry experts and regulators alike. “It’s not just about the missed deadline,” says Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a local economist. “It’s about the lack of transparency and accountability. If KM Malta has nothing to hide, then why the secrecy?”
Regulators: Tough Talk, Soft Action
The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) and the Civil Aviation Directorate (CAD) have both issued statements expressing their concern over KM Malta’s tardiness. However, their actions have been less than strong. While the MFSA has the power to impose fines and even suspend the airline’s operating license, it has yet to take any such action. The CAD, meanwhile, has merely issued a reminder of the importance of timely filings.
When asked about the lack of enforcement action, a spokesperson for the MFSA said, “We are monitoring the situation closely and will take appropriate action if necessary.” But for now, it’s business as usual for KM Malta, much to the frustration of those who believe the airline is getting away with murder.
The Street’s Take: From Frustration to Fury
Walk down Republic Street in Valletta, and you’ll hear a chorus of discontent. From shopkeepers to tourists, everyone seems to have an opinion on KM Malta’s antics. “It’s a disgrace,” says Mario, a local shopkeeper. “They’re playing with people’s lives and livelihoods, and no one’s doing anything about it.”
Tourists, too, are feeling the pinch. “We’ve had our flights cancelled twice now,” says Sarah, a British tourist. “We’re out of pocket, and no one seems to care.”
What Next?
The ball is now in KM Malta’s court. The airline has until August 31st to file its accounts, or face the wrath of the MFSA. But with the airline’s track record, who knows if they’ll make the deadline this time?
For now, all we can do is wait and watch. But one thing’s for sure – the saga of KM Malta is far from over.
