Malta’s Kenyan Community Mourns 16 Schoolgirls
Malta’s Kenyan Community in Mourning
In the heart of Birkirkara, Malta’s Kenyan community is in shock and mourning. The news from home has hit them hard – 16 schoolgirls, their peers and sisters, perished in a suspected arson attack at their boarding school in western Kenya. The tragedy has reverberated across the globe, touching the lives of Maltese Kenyans who call our islands home.
Malta’s Kenyan Community Reacts
Malta’s Kenyan community, though small, is tightly knit. They’ve gathered at the Kenyan Embassy in Floriana, sharing stories, tears, and hugs. “It’s like losing a part of our family,” says Jane, a nurse at Mater Dei Hospital, her voice heavy with emotion. “We’re all so far from home, but this tragedy brings us closer together.”
Back in Kenya, the girls’ families are grappling with unimaginable grief. The Maltese community has rallied around them, setting up a fundraiser at the Kenyan Embassy to support the bereaved families. “We might be thousands of miles away,” says Joseph, a software engineer in Msida, “but we’re still Kenyans. We need to do what we can to help.”
Malta’s Role in Kenya’s Education
Malta’s connection to Kenya’s education system runs deep. Many Kenyan students come to Malta for their A-Levels, with some even staying on for university. The two countries have a student exchange program, with Maltese students teaching in Kenya and vice versa. The girls who lost their lives were part of this exchange, their dreams of education cut cruelly short.
Education Minister Owen Bonnici expressed his condolences, “Our hearts go out to the families of the girls who lost their lives. We stand in solidarity with Kenya during this difficult time.” The Maltese government has offered assistance, with the Ministry of Education ready to support any Maltese students affected by the tragedy.
Back in Birkirkara, the community is planning a candlelight vigil for this Friday. They’re inviting all Maltese to join them, to stand together against violence and to remember the 16 lives lost too soon.
