Padel on Water: Marsa Ship Repair Firm’s Unique Proposal

Barging In: A Padel Court on Water in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court bobbing on the water in Marsa’s Grand Harbour. Not a mirage, but a proposal by a local ship repair company. The maritime industry meets sports in an unexpected twist that’s got Maltese talking.

From Ships to Sports: A Unique Proposal

CMB Engineering, a name synonymous with Malta’s maritime industry, has applied for a permit to install a padel court on a barge in Marsa. The barge, moored in the Grand Harbour, would host the unique sports facility, offering a new perspective on the game and a novel attraction for the area.

But why padel? “We’re seeing a surge in padel’s popularity,” says Mario Mifsud, CMB’s Director. “We thought, why not bring it to the water? It’s a fun, social sport. We want to create a unique experience for players and spectators alike.”

Navigating the Naysayers and the Nuts and Bolts

Not everyone’s thrilled with the idea. Environmental concerns have been raised, with some questioning the impact on the harbour’s ecosystem. Others worry about safety and noise pollution. But CMB insists they’ve thought of that.

“We’re working with environmental experts to mitigate any impact,” Mifsud assures. “And safety? That’s our top priority. The barge will be securely moored, with safety measures in place. As for noise, well, it’s a sports facility. There’ll be some, but we’re looking into soundproofing solutions.”

Then there’s the practical side. The barge will be equipped with a generator for power, and water and waste management systems will be in place. Access will be via a gangway from the Marsa Sports Club, with parking available on-site.

: A New Wave of Sports Tourism?

If approved, this could be a breakthrough for Marsa and Malta’s sports tourism scene. “We’re hoping this will attract sports enthusiasts from abroad,” Mifsud says. “Imagine international padel tournaments with a view of Valletta’s skyline. That’s our vision.”

But first, the proposal needs to navigate Malta’s planning system. A public consultation is underway, with feedback welcomed. So, Malta, what do you think? A padel court on water, or a step too far?
