Padel on the Waves: Marsa Shipyard’s Unique Proposal

Barging In: Padel Court on Water in Marsa?

Imagine this: a padel court, not on solid ground, but floating on the Marsamxett Harbour in Marsa. It’s not a scene from a futuristic movie, but a proposal put forth by a local ship repair company. The company, based at the Marsa Shipyard, has applied for a permit to set up a padel court on a barge, a first of its kind in Malta.

Why a Padel Court on Water?

The company, which repairs and maintains ships, sees this as an innovative way to utilise their maritime resources. “We have the space and the means to create something unique,” said the company’s spokesperson. “Why not turn our barges into a fun, recreational area for the public?”

Padel, a racket sport combining elements of tennis and squash, has gained significant popularity in Malta in recent years. With courts popping up across the island, from Msida to Å»urrieq, this proposal adds a new dimension to the sport’s local scene.

Local Reaction and Practicalities

News of the proposal has sparked curiosity and debate among Marsa residents and padel enthusiasts. “It’s certainly an interesting idea,” said Joe, a local resident. “It could bring some life to the area, but I’m not sure how practical it would be.”

Practical concerns include accessibility, especially during rough weather, and potential noise pollution for nearby residents and businesses. The company, however, assures that the court will be equipped with soundproofing measures and that accessibility will be ensured through a safe, stable gangway.

Environmental impact is another factor under scrutiny. The company has promised to ensure the barge is equipped with eco-friendly features, such as solar panels for power and a rainwater harvesting system.

Whether this unique padel court becomes a reality depends on the approval of the Planning Authority. If given the green light, it could be a breakthrough for both the padel scene and the Marsa waterfront.
