Mdina’s Secret: Illegal Works Threaten UNESCO Site
Beneath the ancient stone bastions of Mdina, Malta’s former capital, a secret has been uncovered. Illegal construction works, hidden from prying eyes, have been taking place on protected land. The Planning Authority (PA) has launched an investigation, raising concerns about the preservation of our historic sites.
Unveiling the Hidden Works
Neighbours’ complaints about noise and vibrations led to the discovery of the illicit activities. The PA, upon inspection, found unauthorized structures being built on land designated as ‘Area of High scene Value’ and ‘Area of High Archaeological Potential’. This means the land is protected by law, with any development requiring special permits.
Mdina: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Mdina, known as the ‘Silent City’, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its strategic location and rich history have made it a popular tourist attraction. The illegal works threaten not only the integrity of the site but also its tourism potential. Dr. Anthony Pace, a local historian, expressed his concern, “Mdina’s unique character is at risk. We must protect it for future generations.”
The Investigation and Next Steps
The PA has issued enforcement notices, ordering the halt of all works and the removal of unauthorized structures. They are also investigating who is responsible and whether any officials were involved. Meanwhile, the public is urged to report any suspicious activities in protected areas.
Minister for Heritage and Culture, Dr. José Herrera, stated, “We will not tolerate such actions. We’re committed to preserving our cultural heritage and will take all necessary legal action.”
