Malta Celebrates Vespa’s 80th Birthday with Valletta Convoy

Vespas Invade Valletta: Malta Joins Rome in Celebrating Scooter Legend

Imagine the narrow streets of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, filled with the hum of two-stroke engines and the sight of gleaming Vespa scooters. This isn’t a scene from a vintage film, but a reality as Malta joins Rome in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the iconic Vespa.

From Piaggio to Piazza

Born in 1946 in Pontedera, Italy, the Vespa was an instant hit, symbolizing freedom and style in post-war Europe. Eight decades later, it’s still a beloved symbol of Italian culture, and Malta’s Italian community is ensuring that the Vespa’s anniversary is celebrated in style.

On Sunday, April 24th, the Vespa Club Malta will lead a convoy of Vespa enthusiasts through the historic streets of Valletta. The route will take them past iconic landmarks like St. George’s Square, the Grandmaster’s Palace, and the iconic Barrakka Lift, offering a unique blend of vintage and modern Malta.

Malta’s Vespa Love Affair

Malta’s love affair with the Vespa began in the 1950s when the first scooters arrived on the island. They were perfect for navigating Malta’s narrow streets and winding country roads. Today, Vespa enthusiasts in Malta restore, maintain, and ride these classic scooters with pride.

One such enthusiast is Joe Xuereb, a Malta-based Vespa collector and restorer. Joe, who has been riding Vespas since the 1960s, says, “Vespas are more than just a mode of transport. They’re a lifestyle. They’re freedom, fun, and a sense of community.”

Celebrating in Style

The Vespa Club Malta’s anniversary celebration will culminate in a gathering at the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where Vespa owners and enthusiasts can enjoy panoramic views of the Grand Harbour while sharing stories and admiring each other’s scooters.

If you’re in Malta and want to join the celebration, meet at the Vespa Club Malta headquarters in Msida at 9 am on April 24th. The convoy will depart at 10 am sharp. Remember to wear your helmet and follow all traffic rules.
