Malta’s Green Revolution: New Electric Bus Fleet Hits the Roads
Standing at the bustling bus terminus in Valletta’s Republic Street, you can’t miss them. The sleek, electric buses, their silent hum a stark contrast to the traditional diesel guzzlers, are a testament to Malta’s commitment to a greener future. Today, June 28, 2026, marks the official launch of Malta’s first electric bus fleet, a significant milestone in our island nation’s sustainable transportation journey.
From Petrol to Plug-in: A New Era for Malta’s Buses
Malta Public Transport, the state-owned company responsible for public transport on the islands, has invested heavily in this green transition. The new fleet, consisting of 50 electric buses, will initially serve key routes across Malta, including the popular Valletta to Sliema and Msida to Birkirkara routes. The first electric bus rolled off the production line at the Malta-based factory of Chinese automaker BYD, marking a significant step towards reducing Malta’s carbon footprint.
“This is not just an investment in new buses, but an investment in our planet’s future,” said Malta’s Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects, Joe Mizzi. The minister, speaking at the launch event held at the Bus Terminus in Ħal Far, emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainable transportation. “We are proud to be at the forefront of this green revolution, leading the way for cleaner, healthier air for all Maltese residents,” he added.
Charging Ahead: Infrastructure for the Future
The introduction of electric buses is just the beginning. Malta Public Transport has also invested in state-of-the-art charging infrastructure, with charging stations installed at key bus termini across the islands. The first of these, a sleek, modern charging station, was unveiled today at the Ħal Far Bus Terminus, where the new electric buses will be based.
But the transition to electric buses isn’t just about reducing emissions. It’s also about creating a more comfortable, efficient public transport system. The new buses, equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and USB charging ports, promise a more pleasant commuting experience for Malta’s bus users.
“We’re not just swapping one type of bus for another,” said Malta Public Transport CEO, Alexei Dingli. “We’re creating a new, sustainable public transport system that’s fit for the 21st century. A system that’s not just kinder to the environment, but also kinder to our passengers.”
