Malta’s New Bus Routes: A Bumpy Start to Greener Travel
Traffic Snarls as New Bus Routes Unveiled
Commuters in Malta braved gridlocked traffic this morning as the new bus routes, announced yesterday, took effect. The revamped public transport system, part of the government’s ‘Green Mobility’ initiative, aims to reduce congestion and encourage more people to use buses.
New Routes and Timetables
The Public Transport Services have introduced 15 new routes and revised timetables, with the most significant changes affecting the central districts. Route 101, previously running from Valletta to Msida, now extends to Birkirkara, while Route 102 has been rerouted to serve the Three Cities.
Meanwhile, the new Route 151 connects Pembroke to St. Julian’s, aiming to cater to the high demand from residents and tourists in these areas. The changes have been welcomed by some, but others have expressed concerns about the increased travel time.
Reactions from Commuters
Maria, a 35-year-old marketing manager from Birkirkara, said, “The new route is great, but it’s taking me 15 minutes longer to get to work. I hope the traffic eases up soon.” Meanwhile, Joseph, a 65-year-old retiree from Birgu, was pleased with the changes. “I can finally get to Valletta without having to change buses twice,” he said.
Transport Minister, Michael Falzon, acknowledged the teething problems but assured the public that the changes were necessary for a greener, more efficient public transport system. “We understand the inconvenience caused, but we’re working hard to ensure these changes benefit everyone in the long run,” he said.
