Malta’s Green Revolution: New Solar Farm and EV Charging Stations Unveiled
Imagine standing at the edge of Marsaxlokk’s sprawling bay, the sun reflecting off the azure waters, and suddenly, a new sight catches your eye. It’s not a fishing boat or a tourist yacht, but a vast expanse of solar panels, shimmering under the Mediterranean sun. This is not a mirage, but a reality unfolding on our doorstep.
Solar Farm: A Sun-Powered Future for Marsaxlokk
On June 28, 2026, Malta’s Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Dr. Michael Farrugia, announced the commencement of construction on a state-of-the-art solar farm in Marsaxlokk. This 20-megawatt project, a joint venture between local and international investors, will be one of the largest solar farms in the Mediterranean.
Spread over 50 hectares of land, the solar farm will generate enough clean energy to power approximately 10,000 Maltese homes. It’s a significant step towards Malta’s ambitious target of achieving 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
But this is more than just a numbers game. It’s a testament to Malta’s commitment to sustainable development. “We’re not just building a solar farm,” said Dr. Farrugia, “we’re building a future where our energy comes from the very sun that shines so brightly on our islands.”
Electric Vehicle Revolution: Charging Stations Popping Up Across Malta
But the announcements didn’t stop at Marsaxlokk. In a simultaneous press conference, Transport Malta revealed plans to install 50 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country. This includes locations in popular spots like Valletta’s Republic Street, Sliema’s Tower Road, and even in rural areas like Rabat and Zebbug.
These charging stations, a mix of fast and slow chargers, are part of the government’s strategy to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. “We want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for Maltese drivers to go electric,” said Hon. Ian Borg, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects.
these charging stations will be integrated with a user-friendly mobile app, allowing EV owners to locate, reserve, and pay for charging services seamlessly. The app is expected to launch later this year, with a pilot phase starting in July.
