Malta’s World Cup Dream: Can We Make It to Qatar?

In the heart of Valletta, the bustling Republic Street was a sea of red and white last night. The Maltese flag waved from every balcony, as fans spilled onto the streets, cheering and singing. The World Cup had just been drawn, and Malta had been placed in Group F, alongside powerhouses like Belgium and Sweden. But the question on everyone’s lips was, “Could this be our year?”

From Disappointment to Determination

The last time Malta qualified for a major tournament was back in 1980, for the FIFA World Cup. Since then, it’s been a long, hard road. But this year, something feels different. The national team, led by coach Devis Mangia, has been on a roll, unbeaten in their last eight games. The 1-0 win against Croatia in March, a team that qualified for the 2018 World Cup, was more than just a victory. It was a statement.

Malta’s World Cup Journey: A Tale of Two Halves

The draw in Doha was a mixed bag for Malta. On one hand, we’re up against Belgium, the number two ranked team in the world. On the other, we’ve been drawn with Sweden, who we’ve beaten before, and Czech Republic, who we’ve drawn with. It’s a tough group, but not impossible. As Malta Football Association President, Norman Darmanin Demajo, put it, “It’s a challenging group, but we’re ready for the challenge.”

Malta’s road to Qatar starts in March, with a home game against Sweden. The Ta’ Qali National Stadium will be a fortress, filled with the red and white of Malta. The team will need all the support they can get. But with the way they’ve been playing, who knows? This could be the year we make history.
