Pietà Sanctuary’s Future Clouded by Approved Apartment Block

Imagine waking up to the sight of a towering apartment block instead of the historic Pietà Sanctuary, a cherished landmark that’s been a part of Malta’s skyline for centuries. This is the reality that some Pietà residents are bracing themselves for, as plans for a new apartment block directly opposite the sanctuary have been given the green light.

From Church to Concrete: The Proposed Development

Situated on Triq San Pietru, the proposed development, dubbed ‘San Pietru Residence’, will rise five storeys high, casting a significant shadow over the 17th-century sanctuary. The project, approved by Malta’s Planning Authority, will see the demolition of an existing building to make way for 28 new apartments and underground parking.

Preservation vs Progress: The Debate Rages On

The plans have sparked a heated debate among Pietà residents and heritage enthusiasts. While some welcome the new housing units, others argue that the development will mar the historic skyline and set a dangerous precedent for future developments in Malta’s urban areas.

“This is not about NIMBYism,” says Joe Borg, a long-time Pietà resident. “It’s about preserving our heritage and maintaining the character of our village. Once these apartments go up, there’s no taking them down.”

Planning Authority’s Stance and Next Steps

The Planning Authority (PA) has defended its decision, stating that the development respects the height restrictions and setbacks outlined in the development brief. However, critics argue that the PA has overlooked the visual impact of the new block on the sanctuary and the surrounding area.

With the plans approved, construction on the San Pietru Residence is expected to begin later this year. However, opponents of the project have not ruled out legal action, vowing to explore all options to halt the development.
