Drug Trafficking Arrests Shake Up Birkirkara
Early morning raids in the quiet residential area of Birkirkara left two men in handcuffs and a community on edge. Police, armed with search warrants, descended on two houses on Triq il-Kbira, arresting the suspects for suspected drug trafficking.
Operation ‘Sunrise’: The Dawn Raids
In a coordinated operation dubbed ‘Sunrise’, police swooped in at dawn, catching the suspects off guard. Neighbours, awakened by the commotion, watched from their windows as officers carried out evidence bags from the houses. “It was like something out of a movie,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “I’ve lived here for years, and we’ve always felt safe. This is a shock.”
Drugs and Cash Seized
Police spokesperson, Insp. Loraine Attard, confirmed that officers seized a significant quantity of drugs, believed to be cocaine and cannabis, along with cash and paraphernalia associated with drug trafficking. “Our investigations are ongoing, but we believe we’ve dealt a significant blow to a local drug network,” she said. The two suspects, both Malta residents in their late twenties, are being held at the police headquarters in Floriana for questioning.
Community Reaction and Local Impact
News of the arrests spread quickly through Birkirkara, with residents expressing relief but also concern. “I’m glad they caught them, but it’s scary to think this was happening right under our noses,” said another resident. Local councillor, Joseph Muscat, echoed these sentiments, promising to work with police to ensure the community feels safe. “We won’t tolerate this kind of activity in our community,” he said.
In the wake of the arrests, local businesses have been encouraged to remain vigilant. “We’ve always had a great relationship with the police,” said Mario Vella, owner of the popular Birkirkara bakery, Il-Forno. “We’ll do our part to help keep our community safe.”
