Man Hospitalised After Falling Ill While Swimming in St. Julian’s

Local Swimmer Hospitalised After Sudden Illness in Sea

Emergency services rushed to the aid of a man who fell ill while swimming off the coast of St. Julian’s yesterday afternoon. The incident, which occurred near the popular Spinola Bay, sent a shiver down the spines of beachgoers enjoying the sunny weather.

Rescue and Hospitalisation

The man, believed to be in his late 40s, was swimming when he suddenly started experiencing difficulties. Witnesses on the shore quickly alerted lifeguards who swiftly responded, pulling the man from the water and administering immediate first aid. Paramedics from the Maltese Civil Protection Department arrived shortly after and transported the man to Mater Dei Hospital in an ambulance.

Dr. Matthew Pace, a spokesperson for the hospital, confirmed that the man was admitted with symptoms consistent with a suspected case of marine-related illness. “We are currently investigating the cause of his illness, which could range from a simple infection to a more serious condition like Vibriosis,” Dr. Pace said.

Local Reaction and Advice

Beachgoers at Spinola Bay expressed shock at the incident. “We were just enjoying the sun when suddenly we saw all the commotion,” said Maria Grech, a local resident. “It’s scary to think that something like this can happen so close to home.”

Lifeguards at the scene reminded swimmers to take precautions while in the water. “Always swim within your limits and be aware of any changes in your body,” advised lifeguard Daniel Azzopardi. “If you feel unwell, get out of the water immediately.”

Dr. Mark Pace, a local GP, also offered advice. “If you’re swimming and start feeling unwell, don’t hesitate to get out of the water. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately.”
