Momentum: Cut Comino Visitor Cap by Half

Imagine standing on the shores of Santa Maria Bay, Comino, watching as the daily influx of tourists doubles the island’s population in just a few hours. Now, picture halving that number. That’s what local environmental group, Momentum, is pushing for.

Momentum’s Call for Change

Momentum has been vocal about the strain Comino’s popularity is putting on the tiny island. They’re now calling for a significant reduction in the daily visitor cap, currently set at 1,000. Their proposal? Slash that number to 500.

“Comino is a unique gem, but it’s being loved to death,” says Matthew Vella, spokesperson for Momentum. “We’re not against tourism, but we need to manage it sustainably.”

Overcrowding: The Elephant in the Room

Comino’s Blue Lagoon is a postcard-perfect spot, but it’s become a victim of its own success. On peak days, thousands of visitors descend on the island, overwhelming its infrastructure and causing environmental damage.

From littering to erosion, the impact is visible. “We’ve seen areas around the Blue Lagoon stripped of vegetation, and the water quality suffers from all the activity,” Vella explains. “Something has to give.”

Finding Balance

Momentum isn’t advocating for a complete shutdown of tourism. Instead, they propose a cap reduction coupled with better management. This could include stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, improved waste management facilities, and perhaps even a lottery system for boat tickets to spread out visitor arrival times.

“We want visitors to enjoy Comino, but we also want Comino to still be there for future generations to enjoy,” Vella says. “It’s about finding that balance.”

As the summer season gears up, the debate around Comino’s visitor cap is set to heat up. With Momentum leading the charge, one thing’s for sure: the future of Malta’s little sister island is a big talking point.
