Michael Farrugia: Brewing Farsons’ Future

In the heart of Malta’s industrial hub, at the iconic Farsons Brewery in Mrieħel, a new chapter unfolds. Michael Farrugia, son of the late Louis Farrugia, has taken the reins as the new CEO, marking a significant generational shift in the 85-year-old family-owned business.

From Son to Successor

Michael Farrugia, a familiar face in the local business scene, has been groomed for this role for years. After completing his studies in the UK and gaining international experience, he returned to Malta to join the family business in 2006. He’s since held various roles, most recently serving as the company’s Managing Director. Now, he steps into his father’s shoes, ready to steer Farsons through the choppy waters of the 21st century beverage industry.

Farsons: A Maltese Institution

Farsons is more than just a brewery. It’s a Malta success story, a symbol of resilience and innovation. From its humble beginnings in 1928, it’s grown into a diversified business, producing not just beer, but also soft drinks, bottled water, and even spirits. It’s a significant employer, a major investor in local sports, and a proud sponsor of Malta’s cultural scene.

Michael Farrugia takes over at a time when Farsons is celebrating its 93rd anniversary. But it’s not just about looking back. It’s about . “We’re living in a dynamic world,” Farrugia says, “and we need to keep evolving to stay relevant. That’s my challenge, and I’m ready to face it.”

Brewery of the Future

Farrugia has big plans. He wants to make Farsons a leader in sustainable practices, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint and waste. He’s also looking to expand the company’s product portfolio, capitalising on trends like craft beer and low-alcohol drinks. And, of course, he’s committed to preserving Farsons’ rich heritage, ensuring that Malta’s favourite beer, Cisk, continues to flow.

As he steps into his new role, Farrugia is clear about his vision. “Farsons is more than just a business,” he says. “It’s a part of Malta’s story. I’m honoured to be writing the next chapter.”
