Michael Farrugia: New CEO at Farsons Brewery

In the heart of Malta’s industrial hub, at the Farsons Brewery in Mriehel, a new chapter unfolds. Michael Farrugia, a name familiar to the local business scene, has stepped into the role of Chief Executive Officer, taking the reins from Norman Aquilina who retired after 17 years at the helm.

From Finance to Brews: Michael Farrugia’s New Role

Farrugia, a seasoned finance professional, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He’s no stranger to the corporate world, having served as the Chief Financial Officer at HSBC Malta for over a decade. But brewing beer? That’s a different story. “It’s a new challenge,” Farrugia admits, “but I’m excited to bring my financial acumen to this iconic Maltese brand.”

Farsons: A Maltese Institution

Farsons, established in 1928, is more than just a brewery. It’s a Maltese institution, a staple at local bars and a key player in the island’s social scene. From Cisk to Hopleaf, its beers are as much a part of Malta’s cultural scene as the Three Cities or the traditional Maltese balcony.

Farrugia understands the weight of his new role. “Farsons is more than a company,” he says. “It’s a part of Malta’s history, and I’m committed to carrying that legacy forward.”

: Sustainability and Innovation

Farrugia’s appointment comes at a time when the beer industry is evolving, driven by trends like craft brewing and sustainability. “We’re seeing a shift in consumer preferences,” Farrugia notes. “People are looking for unique, sustainable products.”

Under Farrugia’s leadership, Farsons is exploring these trends. It’s investing in renewable energy, with plans to install solar panels at its brewery. It’s also experimenting with new brews, like its recent collaboration with local craft brewery Lord Chambray.

But Farrugia is quick to assure that Farsons won’t lose sight of its roots. “We’re a local company, and we’ll always be committed to Malta. But we also want to innovate, to stay relevant in a changing world.”
