Two Arrested in Żurrieq Drug Trafficking Raids

Early morning raids in the quiet residential area of Triq il-Kbira, Żurrieq, left two men in custody and a community on edge. Police, acting on intelligence, swooped in around 6 am, arresting the suspects for suspected drug trafficking.

Operation ‘Sunrise’: The Early Morning Raids

Dubbed ‘Operation Sunrise’ by the police, the raids were a culmination of weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering. Armed with search warrants, officers from the Drugs Unit and the Żurrieq police station descended on two houses in the usually peaceful street. Neighbors, awakened by the commotion, watched as police carried out boxes of evidence from the properties.

Drugs and Cash Seized

Police confirmed that they seized a significant quantity of drugs, believed to be cannabis, along with cash and other items suspected to be proceeds of drug trafficking. The drugs, they said, would have a street value of tens of thousands of euros. The suspects, both Malta residents in their late twenties, are being held at the police headquarters in Floriana while investigations continue.

Community Reaction: ‘Not What We’re Used To’

Żurrieq residents, known for their strong community spirit, were taken aback by the news. “This isn’t what we’re used to here,” said Joe, a long-time Żurrieq resident who asked not to use his full name. “It’s a quiet, close-knit community. We look out for each other. This is a wake-up call.” The Żurrieq Local Council echoed these sentiments, promising to work closely with the police to maintain the safety and security of the community.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that even in the most peaceful of communities, the scourge of drug trafficking can rear its ugly head. It also of community vigilance and the strong partnership between the police and the community in keeping our streets safe.
