CareMalta, GWU Clash Over Mellieħa Home’s AC

CareMalta, Active Ageing at Odds Over Mellieħa Home’s Air Conditioning

In the heart of Mellieħa, the gentle hum of air conditioners usually provides respite from Malta’s scorching summers. But this year, residents of Casa Arkati, a CareMalta home for the elderly, have found themselves in an unexpected predicament. The home’s air conditioning system has been a bone of contention, with the General Workers’ Union (GWU) raising concerns and CareMalta maintaining its functionality.

GWU’s AC Alert

The GWU, representing the home’s employees, issued directives earlier this year, alleging that the AC system was faulty and posed health risks to the elderly residents. They pointed to issues with temperature control and air quality, stating that the system was not maintaining the recommended 24°C for elderly care facilities. The union also expressed concerns about potential mould growth due to improper ventilation.

“We cannot compromise on the health and safety of our elderly,” said GWU’s Mario Fava. “We’ve raised these issues with CareMalta, but we’re yet to see significant improvements.”

CareMalta’s Stance

CareMalta, however, has refuted these claims. In a statement, they maintained that the AC system was fully functional and compliant with health and safety regulations. They attributed any perceived issues to human error in operating the system and assured that they were working closely with the GWU to address any concerns.

“We take these matters seriously,” said CareMalta’s CEO, Joseph Falzon. “We’ve conducted thorough inspections and found no evidence of malfunction. We’re committed to ensuring the comfort and safety of our residents.”

CareMalta has invited the GWU for a joint inspection of the AC system, hoping to resolve the issue amicably. The home has also assured residents and their families that they are monitoring the situation closely and taking all necessary precautions to ensure their well-being.

Meanwhile, residents at Casa Arkati, located on Triq l-Indipendenza, have been adjusting to the summer heat with additional fans and open windows, hoping for a swift resolution to the AC conundrum.
