Malta’s Venezuelans United in Solidarity After Devastating Quakes

Malta’s Venezuelan Community United in Solidarity, One Week After Devastating Earthquakes

In the heart of Malta’s Mosta, the scent of arepas wafts through the air, carrying with it echoes of Venezuela. Here, in the bustling streets around Triq il-Kbira, the local Venezuelan community has found a home away from home. But today, the usual chatter is replaced with a somber hush, as the community grapples with the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that have struck their homeland.

Silent Vigils and Shared Sorrow

Last Sunday, under the watchful gaze of the Mosta Dome, a silent vigil was held. Candles flickered in the cool evening air as the community gathered, united in their shared sorrow. The names of the lost were whispered, each one a story, a life cut short. The death toll stands at nearly 2,000, with many more injured and thousands left homeless.

Among the crowd was Maria Rodriguez, a Malta resident for the past five years. “It’s hard to be so far away,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “But we’re here, together, supporting each other and those back home.”

Malta’s Response: Solidarity and Support

Malta’s government has been swift in its response, pledging €100,000 in aid and offering to take in Venezuelan students currently studying in Malta. The Maltese Red Cross has also launched an appeal, with collection points set up across the island.

Local businesses have stepped up too. Bakehouses like Il-Forno in Żebbuġ are donating a portion of their sales, while restaurants like La Stanza in Valletta are hosting fundraisers. “It’s our way of giving back to the community that has welcomed us so warmly,” said Luigi, the restaurant’s manager.

But the community knows that aid is only a temporary solution. What they truly need is a way to help rebuild their homeland. “We need to look towards the future,” said Rodriguez. “We need to find a way to help Venezuela stand tall again.”
