Malta’s Daniel Attard Honoured for Sustainable Tourism Initiatives
Standing before the grand facade of Valletta’s Mediterranean Conference Centre, Daniel Attard, a name familiar to Malta’s sustainable tourism scene, received the prestigious European Parliament’s MEP Award for his outstanding contributions to the sector. The award, presented by Maltese MEP Alex Agius Saliba, recognised Attard’s relentless efforts in promoting eco-friendly tourism practices, putting Malta on the sustainable tourism map.
From Local to European Recognition
Attard, a native of the picturesque village of Xagħra in Gozo, has been a driving force behind several innovative projects that have transformed Malta’s tourism scene. His work includes the development of the ‘Malta Sustainable Tourism Policy’, a roadmap aimed at making Malta a leading sustainable tourism destination by 2030.
Speaking at the award ceremony, Attard reflected on his journey, “It’s been a long road, from working with local stakeholders in Gozo to now being recognised at a European level. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when we all work together towards a common goal.”
Sustainable Tourism in Action
Attard’s initiatives have seen the integration of sustainable practices in various aspects of Malta’s tourism industry. From promoting eco-friendly accommodation options like the 3D-printed sustainable house in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, to encouraging sustainable mobility solutions such as the Gozo Fast Ferry, his work has left an indelible mark on the sector.
Attard’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by international bodies. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recently recognised Malta as a pioneer in sustainable tourism, a testament to Attard’s tireless advocacy.
, Attard is eager to build on this momentum. “This award is not just about me, but about everyone who has supported and believed in our vision. It’s about showing the world that Malta is serious about sustainable tourism. Our work is far from over, and I’m excited about what the future holds.”
