Malta Volleyball marathon for Id-Dar tal-Providenza kicks off with €20,000 donation

Under the scorching Maltese sun, a volleyball hit the sand at Ghadira Bay, marking the start of a marathon like no other. This wasn’t just any beach game; it was the kickoff of a 24-hour volleyball marathon, aiming to raise €50,000 for Id-Dar tal-Providenza, Malta’s leading home for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

€20,000 in, Ready to Serve

The marathon, organised by the Malta Volleyball Association in collaboration with the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, got off to a swinging start with a €20,000 donation from the Malta Tourism Authority. The cheque was presented by MTA Chairman, Gavin Gulia, who echoed the spirit of the event, “This is more than just a game. It’s about unity, perseverance, and giving back to our community.”

Ghadira to Golden Bay: A Volleyball Pilgrimage

The marathon will see teams of six players each, battling it out across five beaches – Ghadira, Golden Bay, Mellieha Bay, St. Peter’s Pool, and Ghajn Tuffieha. Each team will play a minimum of two hours, with the final match set at 6 pm on Sunday. Among the participants are teams from local hotels, restaurants, and even a team representing the Maltese Armed Forces.

“We’ve got teams from all walks of life coming together for this cause,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Volleyball Association. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about showing solidarity and raising awareness for Id-Dar tal-Providenza.”

More Than a Game

Id-Dar tal-Providenza, nestled in the heart of Siġġiewi, has been a beacon of support for those in need since 1965. The home provides a safe haven, medical care, and rehabilitation services to over 150 residents. The marathon’s proceeds will go towards the continuous improvement of these services.

“We’re incredibly grateful for this initiative,” said a representative from Id-Dar tal-Providenza. “Every euro raised will go towards ensuring our residents lead dignified, happy lives.”

If you’d like to support the cause, you can donate online at Id-Dar tal-Providenza’s website, or better yet, head down to any of the participating beaches and show your support in person.
