Malta 'Stop It Now' helpline set up for people with sexual thoughts about children

In the heart of Malta, at the bustling St. John’s Street in Valletta, a new helpline has been set up in a quiet corner of the Child Protection Unit at Mater Dei Hospital. Its purpose? To provide support and intervention for individuals struggling with unwanted sexual thoughts about children. The ‘Stop It Now’ helpline, a first in Malta, is ready to answer calls, offering a lifeline to those grappling with these thoughts, and aiming to prevent child sexual abuse before it happens.

Understanding the Helpline’s Role

The helpline, launched in collaboration with the National Commission for the Protection of Children, aims to break the cycle of child sexual abuse by providing a safe space for individuals to discuss their thoughts and feelings. It’s not about punishing, but preventing. “We’re here to help people understand and manage their thoughts, to prevent them from acting on them,” said a spokesperson for the project, who wished to remain anonymous.

How It Works

Operating from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, the helpline is staffed by trained professionals who can provide immediate support, guidance, and referrals to therapy services. The service is confidential and non-judgmental, ensuring that callers feel safe to open up about their struggles.

But what if someone is having these thoughts and doesn’t know how to reach out? The helpline is also proactive, reaching out to potential callers through targeted online advertising and community outreach. “We’re making sure people know we’re here, that they’re not alone, and that there’s help available,” the spokesperson added.

Community Response

Reactions from the local community have been mixed. While some welcome the initiative, others express concern about the potential stigma it might create. “I think it’s a good thing, but I worry about the message it sends,” said Maria, a local resident. “It’s like we’re saying it’s okay to have these thoughts, just don’t act on them. I’m not sure that’s the right message to send.”

However, Dr. Joseph Cuschieri, a clinical psychologist, supports the initiative. “This helpline is a crucial step in preventing child sexual abuse. It’s about intervening early, providing support, and preventing harm,” he said.

As Malta continues to of child protection, the ‘Stop It Now’ helpline stands as a testament to the island’s commitment to preventing child sexual abuse. It’s a lifeline, a beacon of hope, and a call to action for anyone struggling with unwanted sexual thoughts about children.
