Mosta’s Unlikely Heroes: Malta’s First Band
In the Heart of Malta: The Unlikely Rise of Mosta’s First Band
Picture this: a small, tight-knit community nestled in the heart of Malta, where the scent of fresh bread wafts through the air each morning. This is Mosta, a town known for its grand church and delicious pastizzi, but not necessarily for its music scene. Yet, here we are, in 2022, talking about Mosta’s first band, ‘The Unlikely Heroes’. How did this happen?
From Garage Jams to Local Gigs
It all started in a garage on Triq il-Kbira, where five friends – Matthew, Daniel, Andrew, Mark, and Stefan – decided to turn their shared love for music into something more. They were just teenagers, armed with second-hand instruments and a dream. “We’d play Metallica and AC/DC covers,” recalls Matthew, now the band’s lead vocalist. “Our parents thought we were crazy, but they supported us anyway.”
Word spread, and soon, ‘The Unlikely Heroes’ were playing at local events – the Mosta Festival, the Christmas market, even the occasional birthday party. Their sound was raw, energetic, a mix of classic rock and Malta’s own folk influences. They were, in a word, authentic.
Breaking Through: The Malta Eurovision Song Contest
In 2021, the band decided to take a leap of faith. They entered the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with their original track, ‘Heroes of Our Time’. The song was a tribute to Malta’s resilience, inspired by the island’s COVID-19 lockdown. It was a long shot, but the band’s passion was undeniable.
They made it through the semi-finals, performing live on national television. The Mosta community rallied behind them, filling social media with messages of support. “We felt the love,” says Daniel, the band’s drummer. “It was overwhelming, in the best way possible.” They didn’t win, but they had made their mark.
: More Than Just a Band
Today, ‘The Unlikely Heroes’ are more than just a band. They’re a symbol of Mosta’s spirit, a testament to what can happen when you dare to dream big. They’re working on their debut album, planning local gigs, and even mentoring younger musicians. “We want to give back to our community,” says Andrew, the band’s guitarist. “We’re from Mosta, and we’re proud of it.”
So, what’s next for Malta’s most unlikely heroes? , but one thing’s for sure – they’ll be doing it their way, with heart, and with Mosta in their hearts.
