St Julian’s to Get Two-Storey Sports Complex

Revitalising Vacant Land: St Julian’s Eyes Two-Storey Sports Complex

Ever driven past the derelict plot on St Julian’s promenade, near the Spinola Bay roundabout, and wondered what it would take to transform that eyesore into something beneficial for the community? Well, wonder no more. Plans are afoot to build a two-storey sports complex on that very site, breathing new life into the vacant land.

From Neglect to New Beginnings

The 1,200 square metre plot, currently an unsightly mix of overgrown weeds and litter, could soon be home to a state-of-the-art sports facility. The proposed complex, designed by local architects AP Valletta, includes a multi-purpose sports hall, a gym, changing rooms, and even a rooftop sports area with a view of Spinola Bay.

St Julian’s Mayor, Boris Cezar, sees this project as a breakthrough for the area. “This complex will not only enhance the visual appeal of the promenade but also provide much-needed sports facilities for our residents and visitors alike,” he says.

Community Engagement and Environmental Considerations

The project, a joint venture between the St Julian’s Local Council and a private investor, has been designed with community engagement and environmental sustainability in mind. The complex will be built to meet high environmental standards, with plans for green roofs and energy-efficient design features.

the council has been actively seeking public feedback on the project. “We’ve held several public consultations and received positive responses,” says Cezar. “We’re committed to ensuring this complex meets the needs of our community.”

What’s Next for the Sports Complex?

The project is currently in its planning phase, with the council aiming to submit a permit application to Malta’s Planning Authority by the end of the year. If approved, construction could begin as early as 2023, with an estimated completion time of 18 months.

Once operational, the complex is expected to host a variety of sports activities, from basketball and volleyball to fitness classes and community events. It’s set to become a hub for sports enthusiasts and a welcome addition to St Julian’s vibrant scene.

So, the next time you drive past that vacant plot, imagine instead a bustling sports complex, a beacon of community spirit and environmental responsibility. That’s the vision for St Julian’s, and it’s well on its way to becoming a reality.
