Archbishop’s Surprise Visit Boosts GWU Workers’ Spirits

Archbishop’s Surprise Visit to GWU: A Spiritual Boost for Workers

It was a typical Tuesday morning at the General Workers’ Union (GWU) headquarters in Msida. The usual hum of activity filled the air as union members and staff went about their day. Then, suddenly, the front door swung open and in walked none other than Archbishop Charles Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta, with a warm smile and a wave.

The GWU, Malta’s largest trade union, was taken by surprise. The Archbishop’s visit was unannounced, a spontaneous decision made on his way to another engagement. But it was clear that he was right at home among the workers, greeting them with familiarity and respect.

Spiritual Leadership in the Workplace

Archbishop Scicluna’s visit was more than just a courtesy call. He came to offer spiritual guidance and support to the workers, many of whom are facing challenging times due to the ongoing pandemic and economic uncertainty. “The Church is here to support you, to remind you that you are not alone,” he told the gathered workers.

For the GWU, this visit was a morale boost. “We see the Archbishop’s visit as a sign of solidarity and support,” said GWU President Mario Camilleri. “It reminds us that our work is not just about negotiating wages and working conditions, but also about caring for our members’ spiritual well-being.”

A Blessing for the Union and Its Members

The Archbishop’s visit included a tour of the GWU’s facilities, a meeting with the union’s executive committee, and a blessing of the premises. He also took time to speak with individual members, listening to their stories and offering words of encouragement.

One GWU member, Maria, a nurse at Mater Dei Hospital, shared her struggles with the Archbishop. “I told him about the long hours and the stress we’re under,” she said. “He listened and understood. It meant a lot to me.”

The Archbishop’s visit ended with a group photo and a promise to return. As he left, he reminded the workers, “Remember, you are never alone. God is always with you, and so is the Church.”

As the Archbishop’s car pulled away, the GWU headquarters was filled with a sense of warmth and renewed spirit. The workers returned to their tasks, buoyed by the knowledge that their union, and they themselves, had been blessed.
